But you can also do things at home to improve your symptoms. Some of them will even boost your health overall, and lower your chances for other medical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-2\">Tip 1: Lose Weight if You Need To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all people with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-apnea\/default.htm\">sleep apnea<\/a>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/obesity\/features\/am-i-obese\">overweight<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/obesity\/video\/obesity-risks\">obese<\/a>, but about half are. If you have some extra weight, then slimming down &#8212; even by a few pounds &#8212; can often improve your symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one study, 71 people with the disorder got either lifestyle counseling or joined a program that included a 12-week low-calorie diet. On average, those in the diet group shed 16 pounds. After 2 years,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-apnea\/video\/breus-sleep-apnea\">sleep apnea<\/a>&nbsp;was much less severe for them than it was for the people who got counseling only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study looked at how dropping pounds affected sleep apnea among obese people with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.webmd.com\/guide\/diabetes_symptoms_types\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>. The people joined either a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/default.htm\">weight loss<\/a>&nbsp;group or a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diabetes\/rm-quiz-diabetes-dos-donts\">diabetes management<\/a>&nbsp;group for 1 year. On average, those in the weight loss group lost nearly 24 pounds, while those in the other group lost 1.3 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effects of trimming down were even more dramatic in this study. More than three times as many people in the weight loss group wound up with no&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-apnea\/symptoms-of-sleep-apnea\">symptoms of sleep apnea<\/a>&nbsp;at all. And among the people in that group who still had the disorder, it was much less severe after they slimmed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-3\">Tip 2: Limit Alcohol and Stop Smoking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You already know that lighting up and drinking too much booze aren\u2019t the healthiest moves you can make. Did you know they can also make your sleep apnea symptoms worse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cigarette&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/smoking-cessation\/default.htm\">smoking<\/a>&nbsp;increases swelling in your upper airway. That can aggravate symptoms like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-apnea\/snoring\">snoring<\/a>&nbsp;and pauses in breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol decreases the muscle tone in the back of the throat, which can interfere with air flow &#8212; the last thing you need when you already have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/breathing-problems-causes-tests-treatments\">breathing problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-4\">Tip 3: Eat Healthy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some research shows that sleep apnea may mean you&#8217;re more likely to choose the unhealthy stuff at meals and snacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Continued<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you don\u2019t get&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-requirements\">enough sleep<\/a>, you might be more likely to crave carbs. Lack of Zzz&#8217;s and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/guide\/why-so-tired-10-causes-fatigue\">fatigue<\/a>&nbsp;have also been linked with changes in the hormones&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/obesity\/features\/the-facts-on-leptin-faq\">leptin<\/a>&nbsp;and ghrelin, which control your feelings of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/features\/top-10-ways-to-deal-with-hunger\">hunger<\/a>&nbsp;and fullness. When you\u2019re tired, you may want to eat more, and you might feel less satisfied when you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be overweight to have an unhealthy diet. In a study of 320 adults, those with more severe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/default.htm\">sleep<\/a>&nbsp;apnea ate more protein, fat, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cholesterol-management\/features\/truth-about-saturated-fats\">saturated fat<\/a>&nbsp;than those who had a less-severe problem, regardless of how much they weighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-6\">Tip 4: Take Charge of Your Allergies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that sleeping and breathing are harder when you\u2019re stuffed up from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/rhinitis\">nasal allergies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture your airway as a long, muscular tube running from your nose to your windpipe. If your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/default.htm\">allergies<\/a>&nbsp;aren\u2019t under control, the tissues of your upper throat swell and make the airway narrow. With less space for air, breathing gets harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/ss\/slideshow-allergy-attack\">nasal allergies<\/a>, talk to your doctor about how to get them under control. It may help to use a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/neti-pots\">neti pot<\/a>&nbsp;or a saline nasal spray before bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-7\">Tip 5: Build a Good Sleep Routine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shut-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/picture-of-the-eyes\">eye<\/a>&nbsp;is an important part of good health. The catch is that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/ss\/slideshow-sleep-disorders-overview\">sleep<\/a>&nbsp;apnea makes it hard to get enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half of people with the condition have most of their breathing problems when they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-habits-assessment\">sleep<\/a>&nbsp;on their backs. So most doctors encourage people to try to stay in other positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how can you get into the habit? Some doctors suggest a simple trick: Put two tennis balls into a tube sock and pin it to the back of your PJs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devices that improve breathing for people with the disorder, including a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/sleep-apnea\/mouth-devices-for-sleep-apnea\">CPAP<\/a>&nbsp;machine, can also help.
